The unspoken philosophy seems to be: “If you are drawn to a piece — no need to overanalyze. Buy only what you love. ”Slightly out of town but still on South Street the South Street Gallery is tucked into a wooded lot on a mostly residential block. There is an elegance and formality that is indicated by the careful exhibits and matching gold frames. As you speak with Kate you are drawn in by her gracious manner that manifests in always being available to answer a question. At the same time you feel the freedom to contemplate your favorites in silence. While many South Shore Galleries carry mostly local work the South Street Gallery represents many different artists in New England.

Housewarming The Center for Emerging Visual Artists has moved its exhibition space from the Barclay to more gallery-like quarters on Locust Street between 15th and 16th Streets. The first show in its new ground-floor and underground digs is not to be missed particularly Scott Pellnat’s extraordinary Slave Ship a sprawling fastidiously made sculptural evocation of how an 18th-century slave ship might be experienced in one’s imagination or a dream. Katie Merken’s photographic collages of trees and totemic sculpture of sections of cut tree trunks interspersed with cast-plaster forms also await you as do Peter Prusinowski’s sublime black-and-white photographs of Fishtown.
