Licking County Arts moving to new location to expand outreach

LCA has eliminated its only employee salary — for the gallery curator position — and instead will rely on members to operate the gallery space. An exhibition committee will plan art shows. Licking County Arts leased its Second Street gallery space from The Works for the past seven years. Marcia Downes managing director of The Works said the museum and arts center hopes to recruit new artists to use that gallery space. “We are very excited by LCA’s relocation to a larger space” Downes said in an e-mail. “This means that they are ready to expand their footprint in Newark and Licking County and that is great for our community and also for all the local artists that are affiliated with that organization. “The artists plan to share their talents and fellowship during studio time in the new 1800-square-foot building.

And he thinks Hudson is an ideal place to do that because it’s a place where people come “looking for something” without necessarily having anything definite in mind. Swope who was born in Philadelphia and grew up in the Southwest began his career in New York City as an assistant to Mathias Komor whom he calls “a distinguished [art] dealer in the days when people collected various styles. ” When Komor retired Swope created a job for himself with Robert Miller Gallery on 57th Street then got the backing of Asher Edelman for the Daedalus Gallery on a higher floor in the same building. He began traveling to Europe with millions of dollars to spend at some of the most famous galleries of ancient art in London Paris Zurich and Geneva. “That” he says “was lots of fun. ” Unfortunately a recession hit in 1990 business dried up and Swope lost his job. He dealt privately out of an apartment on the Upper East Side for another five years but eventually he sold the bulk of his collection at a Sotheby’s auction and moved to Ancram.
