Famed street painter’s Bethlehem mural vandalized
CTV.ca – Dec 24, 2007
24 2007 1:26 PM ETCTV. ca News StaffBethlehem residents have painted over a satirical mural by reclusive guerrilla artist Banksy that was designed to highlight the plight of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The mural was an attempt by the famed British street painter whose paintings regularly fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction to attract tourists to Bethlehem and stimulate its faltering economy. Six images were painted on walls buildings and the eight-metre high Israeli security barrier that encircles the city which Israel deems a protective measure against suicide attacks and Palestinians see as a symbol of oppression. But Banksy’s politically charged paintings particularly an Israeli soldier checking a donkey’s security identification has angered and offended some residents. ther images depict a small girl clad in a pink dress frisking an Israeli soldier and a dove with wings outstretched wearing a bullet-proof vest caught in a sniper’s crosshairs. While some found the images insulting others praised Banksy and the coalition of international artists who descended on the West Bank city in their attempt to “offer the ink-stained hand of friendship to ordinary people in an extraordinary situation… “They’re bused in go to the church and come out so they stay here about an hour and they’re told it’s too dangerous to stay any longer. So the economy of Bethlehem is collapsing” British artist Peter Kennard known for his politically charged photomontages and mixed-media installations said of the few tourists who come to Bethlehem. The artwork leads toward a larger project — a gallery called “Santa’s Ghetto” located in Manger Square opposite the Church of the Nativity which can be found about 1. 6 kilometres behind the security wall. The store which is usually located on xford Street in London has functioned as a showcase for underground artists during the month of December for the past six years. “It’s obviously not the job of a loose collection of idiot doodlers to tell you what’s right or wrong about this situation so you’re advised to do further reading yourself” the Santa’s Ghetto website reads. “We would like to make it very clear Santa’s Ghetto is not allied to ANY race creed religion political organization or lobby group.

Commons Confidential: Best of 2007
BBC News – Dec 24, 2007
Mr Kennedy paid a surprise visit to one constituency only to be greeted by the candidate who complained that had he been given more notice of the visit it would have saved him a few quid. Why so? Because he had recently taken his children to London where they visited the famous Madame Tussauds waxworks and found the model of Mr Kennedy so convincing they had their picture taken with it at some cost. “I’ve been using it in my election pamphlets ever since” confessed the candidate. 1030 GMT WEDNESDAY 5 DECEMBER The association of former MPs has been delighted to welcome a new member in the shape of former prime minister Tony Blair… Mind you it’s a good trick if you can do it. It could come in very handy for politicians who would rather not know when they are doing things that perhaps they really shouldn’t – they just don’t tell themselves.

Police Investigate Shooting in Atlanta Mall; Christmas in Bethlehem
CNN International – Dec 24, 2007
KEILAR: We’re getting new information about a story that we brought you a short time ago here about an hour and a half ago there was a shooting at a mall. The gallery at south DeKalb this is about 14 miles east here of downtown Atlanta and what happened was a suspect seemed to be robbing someone there at the mall and then police responded or police were nearby they exchanged fire it appears. Police chased the suspect. The last time we looked at this story they had not picked up the suspect but let’s bring in Mekka Parish with the DeKalb County Police. Mekka has this suspect been picked up now? MEKKA PARISH DEKALB CUNTY GERGIA PLICE: Yes five minutes ago officers did locate the suspect at a home approximately about three to four miles away from the present location and at the present time are transporting him to the hospital. KEILAR: Whose home was this? Was this a relative of the suspect or was this an empty home? Do you know? PARISH: At this time it is unclear of course this is a very fluid situation so don’t know the connection between that suspect and that home at this time… (END VIDETAPE) PPENHEIM: If any of you have not experienced Garrett popcorn in this city that’s something to get. All right beyond that plug we heard a lot of foreign voices. I heard French being spoken today Italian on the street that’s not exactly extremely unusual for Chicago but around this time of year we’re seeing a lot of foreign travelers come to cities like this because of the weak dollar so that is actually helping retailers a lot Brianna that they have people not only from Europe that are traveling here heavily but from around the country who are visiting family and they are having a business shopping day. KEILAR: And Keith I can tell you don is just sal vagt over that popcorn. As you know he used to live in Chicago. He was so excited when he saw the inside of the bag.
